John Reed's, drummer with Toby Twirl, book is a unique inside look at the Sixties and experiencing first-hand what life was like being the drummer in one of the many bands who travelled the country plying their trade and following in the footsteps of The Beatles to Hamburg and touring throughout Germany and the UK. Playing the clubs for hours on end, getting into scrapes that at times were life threatening but somehow managing to stay alive and just about making a living. Meeting Hendrix and supporting The Who, it was a journey that would see the author returning to the UK and joining the Decca recording band Toby Twirl from Newcastle upon Tyne. Some amazing stories and a must read for anyone interested in the decade that was ‘The Sixties’.
Think you know the 1960s? Think again! John Reed’s warm and witty travels - and travails - through the chicken-in-a-basket working men’s clubs of the north-east, the well-populated bars and clubs of Germany and the groovy boutiques of swinging Carnaby Street are a wonderful read and fascinating for anyone like me who’s long loved the work of the band he drummed for - Toby Twirl.
